I’ve never been part of a wedding party before, and now my sister is getting married and has asked me to be her maid of honor. The wedding is still a long ways away, but I want to be prepared in advance.

-So, how long should the speech be?
-I would like to include some funny memory from when we were kids that relates to her personality now, but what else can I put in it?
-I’m not a big fan of really sappy sentimental stuff, but I also don’t want to make it funny, so what do you suggest?
-Any tips, ideas, or good websites or references would be great!

Ok my sister and I both are the maid of honors in our olders sister’s wedding this friday. We wrote our speech and it sounds nice however I didn’t know if taking a shot before or during the speech was a bad idea. By all means it will help our nerves out but do you think it will look bad in front of the family? We were going to take a shot before we started our speech., I thought everyone would think it was funny. The sister who’s getting married is 24 so it’s not like she is old school or anything.
Let me add this detail.
We are bringing our own shot glasses and patron.
